The Child in the Forest
24th July 2020
Short story of a girl who has been abandoned by her only known relative.
A child ran through the forest. She was crying and her eyes were red. She tripped over an exposed tree root and fell to the ground. Too tired and weak to get up, she dragged herself under the nearest pine tree. This tree would hopefully provide her with shelter and a hiding place...
The child's stomach growled, she was hungry. So very hungry. She hadn't had anything in over a day. That's why she tried to bite that person in public. She couldn't help it, she couldn't control herself. And that's why she was currently in this situation. Curled up under a pine tree hoping that no one would see her, or if they did, that they wouldn't care or investigate. The child dragged herself to the trunk of the tree just to be sure that her feet were not exposed. She curled up and heaved a sigh and thought back to what had led up to her being so hungry.
Her father had abandoned her. All she had was her pink bunny rabbit that he had given her before he left her on the mainland without so much as a goodbye. The child cried with the renewed thought about her abandonment. She didn't understand why her father would do such a thing. It dug into her, a weed with its roots tapping into her heart leaching her of her will to go on. The child was only four years old, this was a lot for a four year old to be going through.
Suddenly she heard someone coming. The snow crunching under their feet as they walked closer to the tree. The child held her breath, willing the stranger to go away and to not look under the tree. She knew she would have been easy to find, her own tracks would have lead up to this very place. She could hear the stranger's armor clunking as the stranger walked with heavy steps.
The silence seemed to grow louder as the stranger stopped walking. She could see his armored feet from her hiding spot. This person was a knight. She wished more than ever for him to move on, to walk away. But that did not happen. The silence was broken as she heard the cruel sound of metal on metal--the sound of a sword being drawn. Too weak to fight, the child curled as tight as she could as the knight parted the branches of the tree.
The child waited for him to ultimately impale her on his sword, but that moment did not come. "I am not going to hurt you," the knight said. He reached his hand towards her, "come with me." The child stared at the knight for a minute, deciding on whether she should bite him or go with him. She took his hand, deciding to accept his help and go with him.
"What's your name?" he asked her.
"Oxidize."
