RUN AND RACE
CHAPTER 1: CODY
He ran. He ran until he knew that he could look back. He ran so far that the lights from the busy town soon died off, and he was alone in deepening darkness. He panted, and tired he was, but if he happened to stop now, they'd catch up. No doubt were they already after him. So he continued to run, the darkness his only companion.
His clothes were torn, old, and no doubt a sign of the things he had to do while captured. He, was tall, and had very pale skin, which happened to be very common due to the days of darkness everyone lived in. His face was round, with small scars upon his cheeks. But it was his eyes that told his story. They were bright blue, and glowed in the darkness. His eyes were the only color that many people saw. While the eyes of many others were dull and brown, his were not.
Where he came from, no one knew. It just happened that one day he showed up at that town, no parents, no friends, just himself. He was raised there by a small family. The family didn't want him, but the government had to give him to someone, and the family was the only people who were eligible to take him in. And so they taught him, not with kindness, but with pain. When he did something wrong, they'd make him sure of that. They didn't like him, especially because he was different from everyone else, his eyes weren't brown, and his hair was blonde, not black. Everyday they'd make him do work that the rich family was too lazy to do. And when he did it wrong, he'd have to repeat it.
Once he was old enough to sustained himself, they dumped him and he began to live on his own. He wasn't suppose to live on his own, he was suppose to go to the Household, but bad things happened here, things he didn't wish to endure. Soon he was caught living alone, and was forced into the Household. The Household was a large building located near the center of the city. It was where kids who had nowhere else to go went. The building was a long-rectangle like building made of brick. It had no windows, and the doors were very strong. The building had some of the best security in the whole town. The Household had many many rooms, each having two beds and nothing else. Two kids would room together, but because of his past, he didn't get a room with another person, but instead had to sleep in a small closet that had no beds.
No one at the Household liked the kid, everyone else, including officials, would punish and hurt him, mostly because he was not a true resident and was never born in the city. Everyday, he'd deal with bruises and bumps, cuts and scars. Everyday, he'd get the last of what was left of food, if he was lucky he'd get a piece of bread. Never did he cry.
Up until this point, he didn't know his real name. And because no one else knew his name either, he began to go by Cody. No one knew why, it was simply a name that the kids started calling him. And so he became Cody, but his true name was unknown.
Only a year after arriving at the Household had he managed to escape. His escape took a while to plan, as he had to observe almost the whole Household building in order to pull it off. Cody needed to know where guards were positioned, and at what time were they positioned. He had to figure out the locations of every room in the locations, as well as the people in them, he knew who would turn him in they heard or saw him walking by their door. Cody had to find out the times in which each guard goes to bed, and the days that they turn off the electric fence. After finding out all of this, his escape was made possible.
After he escaped, he would know it'd only be so long until the guards and all of the Household wake up. So Cody knew some shortcuts through town that'd take him to the exit, and so it was these shortcuts that he took that led him to the outside. And so, he ended up where he was now.
Running from his past.
darkness of the world, so many thoughts swarmed his mind. He knew he was running, but he started to wonder why. Was he running, or was he really just in a huge race against time, against the people who hated him and doubted him? Was he running from his past, from them?
He knew the answer.
It was a race.
