Hi! This is my story for the Snaildom Library! It's quite long, but I hope you enjoy!

Prologue

The two snails moved silently through the forest, their shells glistening in the pearly moonlight.
"D-D-Doreen?" whispered the snail with the green shell. "Yes Lawrence?" Asked the purple shelled snail, Doreen. "I think were being followed.." Lawrence said. "Why that's impossible! We're in the darkest part of the forest!" Exclaimed Doreen. Lawrence trembled slightly under his shell. The only light in the forest were the moon casting shadows through the leafy trees, and the snails shiny slime that covered the forest floor. Lawrence started to see shadows. "Cut it out Lawrence" he thought in his head. His eyes were just playing tricks on him. Suddenly, there was a scream. Lawrence jumped in fright, almost knocking his shell off. Then he realized what was off. Doreen was missing! Lawrence started hyperventilating. "This can't be happening this can't be happening!" he thought over and over again. His best friend couldn't be missing, she couldn't! Lawrence felt hot tears of frustration and fear prick his eyes. He knew what he had to do. Reluctant to leave Doreen, where ever she was, in the forest. Scared, alone, maybe dead... He had to. So, leaving a trail of slime, he made his way back to the safety of Snaildom.

Chapter 1

Margaret heard the THUMP before registering what is was. Then she remembered she had invited Old Man Lawrence to ale and golden chips at the Inn. Almost spilling her ale as to her reaction of the noise, Margaret moved toward the door, hearing the grunt of disapproval from the bar tender. "Really? We ALL slime!" Margaret huffed in annoyance. When she finally reached to open the door, there stood Old Man Lawrence. His blue shell had sun spots and a little crack in the corner. His skin wrinkled. He held above his head a rainbow umbrella to shield out the late-night rain. "Hello Margaret.' Lawrence grumped. Old Man Lawrence was always grumpy, which earned him a bad reputation with half of Snaildom. "Hi Lawrence." Margaret sighed, closing The Inn door. Old Man Lawrence must've been REALLY grumpy, because he forgot to call her Margo, or Margy, or another of the horrible nicknames he created just to get on her nerves. But today he forgot. Margaret was strangely relieved. She hated being teased. "Have some ale and chips." Margaret sighed, seeing Lawrence had already helped himself to some ale. As usual, Lawrence droned on about the outrageous fashion choices, no good books in the library anymore, and his favorite topic, the Shadow Woods myth. I entertained myself by watching the bartender trying to mop up his own slime trail, but he ended up going back and forth and not in anymore weird shapes like he was. So I turned my attention to Lawrence I had been nodding and going "mhm" ever since he started speaking. "Margaret did you here me?" "Hm? Oh, sorry Lawrence." "Teenagers" muttered Lawrence. That wasn't true. I'm 24. "So you agree to go and find the Shadow Woods with me?" Of course, my mind decided to have a brain fart, so I just said "Yes." without even knowing. "Wait, what?" I asked, blinking rapidly. "Yippee! I'm going to find the Shadow Woods with Margo!" He said happily. "Remember to pack your torch and a hat!" He said persistently. "Oh-Okay." I said stupidly. And with that, Old Man Lawrence exited The Inn, humming happily and, of course, leaving a long trail of slime.

Chapter 2

The next day, I packed my torch, cap, and some chicken, ale, grape juice, and golden chips for the journey to find the Shadow Woods legend. Legend has it that there's an area in Snaildom unmarked by every map, and it's been claimed that no one has ever set foot in the woods. Except one man. But when he came out of the woods, he refused to tell anyone what happened. The little they got out of him was that there were so many shadows and shapes, which named it, the Shadow Woods. Some say he went insane from the horrors inside the woods and killed himself. But who knows, it apparently happened 60 years ago, so it was none of my concern. Until now apparently. I still couldn't believe Old Man Lawrence had the strength and energy to move so far into the forest. At 9:00 am sharp, I hear a knock on my door. I open it to see Old Man Lawrence looking eagerly at me. "Packed everything?" he asked. "I hope so..." I trailed off. "Let's go then!" Lawrence said happily. He traveled with the agility of a little kid. He hummed happily as we followed the dirt road that lead from the Snail Village to the Clearing, which was a spot near the North Forest that had no trees. It was just rocks and dirt. Then another trail led to the West Forest. And then there was a patch of dark forest I'm guessing is the Shadow Wood. As we near the Clearing, Lawrence makes a sharp turn. "Where are we going?" I ask Lawrence. "I know a shortcut!" He says excitedly. After more moving, we reach the Black Mine, where snails go mining for treasures. "We're going in there?!" I say. "Yup!" Lawrence said happily. I take a gulp. I was mining for treasure once and my mine cart almost tipped over. Ever since then I've had a fear of the Black Mine. But Lawrence moves happily into the mine. "Oh my snail." I sigh. I get out my torch, take a deep breath, and move into the Black Mine.
