History
President Truman of the United States is pondering whether to use the nuclear bombs or not. He decides, unlike our timeline, that using it could be too immoral and probably damage his political career or legacy. He decides to go ahead with the USSR to put forth a dangerous military operation. They decide on Operation Downfall, the invasion of Japan.
By September 1945, they're ready to land their troops in Japan. The USSR prepares its weak navy and sets foot on the beaches of Wakkanai, Japan. Soon after, the US, British, and Nationalist China invade southern Japan and land on the island Kyushu and on the main island Honshu. The Soviets secure all of Hokkaido under its occupation. Before the USSR can invade any further of Japan, Tokyo falls to the US, and the war is over by early 1946. The Japanese Empire surrenders unconditionally.
A new map was drawn, cutting Japan up into occupation zones, similar to Germany. The Soviets occupied Hokkaido, while the US, UK, and NC occupied the rest of Japan. Joseph Stalin decided on putting the Communist Party of Japan in power in Hokkaido. Unlike many other communist asian countries, Communist Hokkaido is peaceful and has no military. It has been a satellite state to the USSR up until the 1960s when it decided to distance itself from the USSR. The USSR decided to tighten its control over the country. Most artists after 1960 decided to try and flee Hokkaido to go to Japan. In 1989, after the USSR weakened its control over Hokkaido, it held a referendum to reunite with Japan. With 85% of the population wanting to reunite, it united with the rest of Japan by August 15th, 1989.
The Communist Party of Japan still operates in Japan, and is one of the largest non-governing party in the world.
