This edition of Useless Knowledge is about something so adorable and cute yet so few people in this part of the world have heard about it. It is about, the fennec!
The fennec is the smallest member of the Fox family. Their tails account for over half the their body's size. The male fennec typically weighs about 3.3 pounds, the female weighs about 1.7 pounds. They live in the Sahara desert and some other North African areas. Much like the typical fox, they are mostly a nocturnal animal.
The fennec has rather large ears that can be up to 6 inches long. The ears are large and help the fox radiate out heat to help keep the it cool in the hot desert climate. The fennec also has long and thick fur that helps keep it warm in the cold nights that it experiences in the desert. Some people hunt the fennec for its fur as it is very soft, which makes it very desirable. They are also incredibly cute which makes them a popular choice for people to try to keep as pets. Fennecs lack domestication so they may be harder to care for and keep as a pet than a dog is. Although, some have successfully been litter box trained.
The fennec is an omnivore known to eat plants, insects, rodents, reptiles, and fruits. Fennecs tend to burrow into the ground and live in small underground dens as their feet are exceptionally well designed for digging with. They are also known to live in small packs with up to 10 members as they are a rather social animal.
