Welcome to the 15th edition of Useless Knowledge. This will be brief.
Meet the Bone Eating Snot Flower.
What is the Bone Eating Snot Flower? Well, for one it is apparently not actually a flower. It is in fact, a worm that feeds on bones in the ocean, thus the name "Bone Eating". The part of the worm that is exposed to the seawater apparently is covered in a ball of mucus, aka "snot". This kind of bone eating worm was found on whale bones, apparently they resembled flowers and also had a root system running through the bone, thus "flower". So put them all together and we get the "Bone Eating Snot Flower". Or the scientific way of saying exactly the same thing, Osedax mucofloris.
Where is it located? Apparently this species has been found in Swedish waters. Though there are similar types in the deeper depths of the Pacific Ocean. Other related species have been found in hydrothermal vents (volcanic cracks) in the ocean floor.
Since most of the Osedax species are located at very deep depths in the ocean they have been hard to study and so not much is known about them.
