It was another sunny day on Das. The Dark Lord Pythas was plotting his revenge upon the forest with his Lieutenant at his side. The Uruks and Goblins were patrolling the various islands. The witches were brewing up something evil in the Forest of Lucre. And the children in the Nursery of Doom had just returned from their morning walk around the evil sites of Das.
“Listen up children, we have a new member joining us,” the old nanny cackled. She motioned towards the door and a small girl was walked in, escorted by two guards. The child was scared and had been crying. “Tell us your name child.”
“My name is Luna Illuvitar,” the child mumbled, looking down at the floor.
“Look at me when you speak, girl!” the Nanny demanded. She slapped the child across the face, causing her to start crying again. “Quit that racket and go take a seat over there!” the Nanny growled.
“Yes ma’am.”
Luna stopped crying and took her seat towards the back corner of the room. The nanny then began teaching the children about the evils of the ainur. Today she focused on Manwe. She talked about how Manwe left some of his servants suffer in the depths of Angband, a story which was based in truth but twisted such that Manwe became an evil villain who had let his servants suffer because he hated them. Tornadoes, hurricanes, and other strong wind events were all also blamed on Manwe and it was taught that he made such things happen for his own enjoyment.
Luna knew all these things were lies, but she couldn’t help but wonder if her father actually did enjoy causing people to suffer. Such was the ability of Nanny Doom. She was charismatic and could make anyone believe just about anything she said.
After the lesson, the nanny passed out worksheets about the great deeds of Melkor. At this point, Luna started looking around the room taking in her surroundings. She noticed that in the corner next to her was a birdcage and a small scraggly looking bird was in it. It was a vulture who happened to be missing most of her feathers.
“I would peck your eyes out if I could,” the vulture hissed at her.
“S-sorry!” Luna was shocked, she had never seen a talking vulture before! “W-why are you in the cage?”
“I was baaaaad.”
Luna started at the vulture, desiring more of an answer.
“I don’t know, ok? Nanny just hates me.” The vulture turned around, and was now facing the wall, her head hanging low.
Luna pitied the vulture. “My name is Luna!” she said, introducing herself.
The vulture did not move.
“What’s your name? Maybe we can be friends!” Luna was determined, she was going to befriend this vulture. She figured she might as well, she would need a friend if she had to stay here long term. But the vulture continued to ignore her. “Fine, ignore me then,” Luna sniffed, beginning to cry again, “it is so hard being new.”
The vulture turned around in her cage and looked at the girl. The vulture replied after some time, “the nanny calls me Hilldred. I don’t know my real name.”
Luna smiled, her fake tears had worked and got the vulture to speak to her. “I will get you out of there.”
“Good luck. It’s locked and the nanny has the key.”
“I will pick her pocket for it then!”
“You’ll get caught. I can tell you’ve never picked a pocket in your life.”
“Then teach me how!”
And so thus, Hilldred explained to Luna the secrets of being a pickpocket. Luna practiced it on a couple unsuspecting classmates and was successful. It was easy! Then again, it’s always easy when your victims are out cold. She brought her new found wares back to the vulture.
“I am ready!” Luna exclaimed, proudly.
The vulture looked at the girl doubtfully. “If the nanny catches you, she will throw you in a cage similar to mine,” Hilldred warned.
“Don’t worry, I won’t get caught!”
Luna went up to the nanny and hugged her while pretending to sob again, a distraction for the nanny while she picks her pocket.
“What are you doing, child?” The nanny creaked, grabbing Luna’s hand, which was reaching into Nanny’s pocket. “Trying to pick my pocket? Is it for that disgusting vulture over there?”
“N-no!”
“Come, child, its time to take you to Pyramidon for Lord Pythas to deal with! Your friend will be dealt with later.” The nanny started walking Luna to the door when suddenly a couple of Nameless Protectors came in.
“Release the girl!” one of them demanded, drawing their sword. The brightness of these beings blinded the nanny. In this moment, the other Nameless Protector quickly grabbed Luna away from her. They quickly made their way out the door.
“Wait!” Luna cried.
“Are you hurt?” one of the Nameless Ones asked, worried.
“Please, rescue my friend too!”
“Your friend?”
“Yes, the one in the cage in the corner!”
One of the Nameless Protectors quickly looked back in the door. “No, we won’t take that one. That is a vulture. It is an abomination to the birds of Manwe.”
“Please!” Luna sobbed. “I will not go without her!”
The Nameless Ones did not heed Luna’s cries and they quickly fled Baraddur before they could be pursued by the servants of Pythas. Luna never forgot the vulture friend she made that day. She often wondered what had become of her and practiced being a pickpocket in her honor. That is, until her parents had her memory erased for her own protection and Luna lost all of her memories.
