Note: This is partially a response to Loki's discussion about the same topic. However, this is not entirely just a response, here I would like to express my personal views on this situation. I have nothing against Loki. Actually, I think she's a very nice person, I just do not agree with her now. I hope you enjoy reading this, even if you disagree. I appreciate all feedback, feel free to dislike this if you think I'm wrong, but please, leave a comment below to specify what's wrong with my reasoning.
Now, let's go to the topic.
Loki's statements evoke the authority of "reason", without a very precise definition of what it. As I've seen this, many people have agreed that it seems illogical to promote another Emperor, since it has never really worked well in the past. The main problem with this is that it makes a connection between past and future that is not true, and it also ignores the present moment.
This has also been defined inversely as the hot hand fallacy. This fallacy consists in the belief or future success due to previous hits. It's like saying "This player will likely make another successful shot because his/hers previous shot was successful". A false connection is made, and this a fundamental claim for all this. I'm not saying you shouldn't trust people because of their previous results, but science has found that this connection is false. As Loki herself said, "promot[ing] another Emperor that isn't Damen (...) NEVER ends well", and that "ultimately Damen will be put back as Emperor and if hes not, there's just chaos until he is (we've proven this three times now)". As we see, there's what I have just described: a false connection between past and future. We must have in mind that just because other Emperors have been killed in the past, it does not mean that future Emperors will have the same fate. The problem is basically the attempt to predict the future through past facts that do not really share a connection. To sum up this, I'd like to mention a frequent speech of financial markets: "Past performance is no guarantee of future results".
Another thing is that this sounds like argumentum ad antiquitatem or "appeal to tradition". It consists basically in saying that something is good or correct because it has always been like this. That's another false claim. I'm not saying that Damen is not a good ruler, I'm just saying that antiquity and tradition are not valid points.
However, the main issue with all this is not recognizing the real problem. The Drake heirs are practically being blamed for something they haven't done. If they are killed, we should firstly inquire why they are killed and blame it on the killers, not on the Drakes themselves, after all, they're the victims, not the cause. And I see that this sort of perspective, this one that blames the Drakes, it does not really contribute to our situation. The main issue is that those murderers do not recognize the legitimacy of the Drake heirs. I believe that once they see the heirs as legitimate heirs, they will stop killing them. But firstly we must do our job, we need to legitimate the Drakes as heirs. The efforts of the UOI (Union of Islands) is very positive when it comes to this. Yet, this won't be done if we blame the Drakes, and if we do not help them, we cannot demand different results.
Also, we will never see a Drake heir as Emperor if we don't give them a chance. Damen himself has chosen his heirs, there's a bloodline and it is meant to be followed. I don't know why it is so problematic to trust Damen's choice now, when many say that Damen should be Emperor once again. If you trust Damen as Emperor, why wouldn't you trust his choice?
