I believe that maybe Gwin went to get the food for his puffle, and there is a penguin angry at him because he thought he was Rsnail and and didn't accept his friend request. So, Gwin was walking home when he saw that penguin, and he ran to the mineshack and climbed to the top. The penguin followed him up, and he tried to get as far away as possible from the penguin. The wood broke, causing him to fall, which made him die, and his puffle ran away with minor injuries. The penguin took Gwin's hat I suppose? That's my answer.
