I've been on a daily binge of movies these past couple of weeks and gotten heavy into the hood genre. Here are three of my recommendations in that category that YOU should definitely watch, alongside a brief reason why.


1. Menace II Society

A 1993's hood classic by the Hughes Brothers, most famous for its violent and realistic depiction of the gangsta life in the ghettos. Highly recommended to start off with.

2. Juice

Tupac debuted as an actor in Juice, a mix of thriller, action, and a teen coming out packed in Harlem. This movie sat with me due to the chemistry between all four of the main characters.

3. Dead Presidents

Based on Haywood T. Kirkland's story in Bloods: An Oral History of the Vietnam War by Black Veterans, the film tells the story of a disillusioned Vietnam War veteran who's difficulty in reintegrating into 1970's America leads to a turbulent robbery.
