You might just think you're reading one of these boring posts about Bullying which everyone has done. Well, you thought wrong. Today I am going to dig deeper on why people cyberbully and what the consequences could be. Do you think that you can do whatever you want online? See if your answer is still the same after reading my post.
What is Cyberbullying?
Cyberbullying is when you harass or harm someone through social media, text messages, and all across the Internet.
Why do people Cyberbully?
There are many reasons why people cyberbully. People may be really nice in real life, but most think that if they say something to hurt someone online, it doesn't affect them in the real world, but they're wrong. Cyberbullying mostly occurs among young people mostly people in their late pre teens and teens. They think that their parents or guardians aren't watching them so they can do whatever they want. If an adult gets involved, it could be called cyberharassment or cyberstalking and many consequences are put on the line.
What are the Consequences of Cyberbullying?
At first people don't realize how big of a deal it is. Then, the person who is getting cyberbullied could tell his/her parents. Although it is not illegal to cyberbully, but it can be considered a criminal offence under several different acts. If it is someone you know at school, your parents could have to deal with the victim's parents and the consequences for you won't be very good. There are so many more, but these are the most common.
My Story of Being Cyberbullied
When I was 13, I was allowed to join Instagram and Twitter. At first, I was really excited and I posted and tweeted and told my friends to follow me. At school, I made a new friend named Victoria. She had both of what I had, instagram and twitter. I told her to follow me and I followed her. We were the best of friends until one day when I came to check my feeds, I figured out that Victoria was commenting on my tweets and ig photos saying rude stuff that I would get banned for if I said them here. After the course of a few weeks it only got worse and worse. It came to a point where she was spreading nasty rumours about me and got my friends to gang up against me. After 6 months, I finally decided to tell someone. I told my parents first and they looked at all the mean comments and called Victoria's parents. Victoria's mom was refusing to admit that her daughter was cyberbullying me. She accused me of being rude and selfish. I did not like that very much and neither did my parents. My parents and I decided to show Victoria's mom. When Victoria's mom found out, she was very furious with Victoria and wanted to call the cops on her, but she didn't. Victoria then realized what she did wrong and kept herself locked in her room for a week straight with only 2 meals a day. It changed who she was forever. It changed her so much that she moved schools and no one has ever heard of her since then. I can say there was something I did wrong too. I didn't protect myself well online. That experience changed who I was forever. I don't give out my really really personal information anymore because of that. It also brought my self-esteem down and my self-esteem hasn't really been the same since then. I haven't joined any social media since then and I never intend to again. It changed who I was forever, and it changed her too.
How To Be A Good Cyber-Citizen?
Online, there are things we can do to try and stop cyberbullying, but one person can't do it all by himself/herself. Here's how you can help prevent yourself from being cyberbullied and how to stop cyberbullying:
-If you have any sort of social media, if you can, set your accounts to private so only your friends can see it.
-Remember what you're putting online. Once you put something on social media, there may be a delete button, but it stays there forever.
-If you know anyone that has been cyberbullied, is cyberbullying someone, or is being cyberbullied, talk to them and try to sort everything out. If they are the bully, remind them of the consequences. If they are BEING cyberbullied, tell them to talk to an adult and reassure them that you're always there to help.
Those are just 3 simple ways you can help. There are so many more ways you can help. Some have not been found, some are not common, and some we can pull off, but only if we work together!
Reflection
Remember what I said at the start of this post. Do you think you can do whatever you want online? Do you think cyberbullying is a joke? I hope not. Let me know your answer. If there's one important thing I want you to take from this post, is that cyberbullying is NOT a joke and is very serious. Do not forget there are always people around you to help you if you are being cyberbullied. I'm one of them.
Conclusion
I hope you guys learned something from this post. I really do love writing these types of posts and I really want to do more to help you guys out a bit but I need ideas. If you have any ideas, please let me know and I will consider them. Please don't be afraid to share your thoughts and feel free to +1 or -1 whatever you want. Have a great day people!
