I bought the new Coldplay album, “Mylo Xyloto”, last week, which surprised me. I’m not a huge Coldplay fan; I don’t really love them or hate them, but they’re so popular that I always think it’s me who doesn’t really “get” the appeal. Sure enough, “Mylo Xyloto” is at number one on iTunes, so go figure.
Anyway, I found the new album as “fine” as I expected. There are a couple tracks I like a little better than others, but the rest didn’t really do much for me one way or the other. The songs I found more memorable than the rest were “Paradise”, “Major Minus” and “Princess of China”, the last song featuring the ubiquitous Rihanna. Most of the rest of the songs sounded rather the same, many of them even a touch dreary (that’s me being a tad British).
Rather than try to write about my indifference, I decided to see what fun facts I could compile about Coldplay and was surprised to get a pretty good list together. I think I might even like Coldplay a bit more after this exercise. As for the album, buy it if you want…or don’t. It doesn’t really matter to me.
The name of the album “Mylo Xyloto” doesn’t mean anything. From lead singer Chris Martin: "At the moment it seems a bit ridiculous and I accept that. Something about it feels quite fresh. The title doesn't have any other meaning. I think we're a band with a lot of history now so it's nice to come up with something that doesn't have any history at all. We've had that title for about two years on a board and any other potential titles had to be written next to it. Other ones made more sense but we just liked this one, that's all we can defend it with."
Coldplay has been nominated for 20 Grammy awards and has won seven.
Since the band’s inception, Coldplay has always given 10 – 15% (depending on what source you read) of their profits to charity.
The last two Coldplay albums were produced by Brian Eno, formerly of Roxy Music.
The original name of the band was Starfish. They took the name Coldplay from another band who didn’t want it anymore because they found it too depressing.
The members of Coldplay have an agreement that anyone who uses hard drugs will be kicked out of the band.
I have read a couple places that the song “Fix You” was written by Chris Martin for his wife, Gwyneth Paltrow, after her father died.
The song “Yellow” was inspired by the Yellow Pages.
Coldplay has decided not to distribute “Mylo Xyloto” to streaming services such as Rhapsody and Spotify. They have not given a reason for this decision.
