After Melkor was defeated and the two Silmarils that he possessed were taken from his crown, Eonwe took them and held them for safe keeping. The last two living sons of Feanor asked for the Silmarils to be returned to them, but Eonwe refused to hand them over until after judgement had been passed on them by Manwe.
