Defeating Melkor

Leading the Host

Eonwe was of those of the valar that were sent to Middle-earth to help defeat Melkor in the first age. Eonwe was the maia who actually lead the host of the Valar to war against Melkor. This war was called the War of Wrath, and in it Melkor was defeated and thrown into the void.

Recovering the Silmarils

After Melkor was defeated and the two Silmarils that he possessed were taken from his crown, Eonwe took them and held them for safe keeping. The last two living sons of Feanor asked for the Silmarils to be returned to them, but Eonwe refused to hand them over until after judgement had been passed on them by Manwe. So the sons stole the Silmarils, but Eonwe was merciful and allowed the two to escape in hope that they would see the error in their ways and return to him.

The Silmarils would be lost after one of the son jumped into lava with his and the other threw his into the ocean.
