Gothmog (Goblin)

Gothmog was the goblin who did business for Pythas in the Black City. He exchanged power and goods for souls. Gothmog is also known of as being the Goblin God.

Residence

Throughout his time, Gothmog resided on the island of Das. He had his own tower called 'The Tower of Gothmog'. From there he worked for both the Witch King and Pythas, doing dark business dealings.

Personality

Gothmog was a very business minded goblin. He was great at convincing people to participate in trades with him and even got many people to sell their souls in exchange for goods. Gothmog was also unable to be threatened by any man as he could often see through people's threats to him and was just generally did not fear being harmed which made him a very intimating goblin.

Doing Business

The main business that Gothmog carried out was getting people to sell their souls to Pythas for various deals. Gothmog kept notes of his various business deals he worked out. He did business with people such as: Snake Boy, Snake Man, the Sunderlands, Stavros, and Grand Most Wise Randal.

Gothmog's end goal was given to him by Cyrus. It was to purchase enough souls on behalf of the Dark Lord where a pile the size of Dead Man's Mountain could be created from all of them.

The mountain in the metaphor.

Snake Boy

Gothmog kept very extensive records of his dealings with Snake Boy, it seems that he had the most issues with him throughout his time of working for Pythas and The Witch King.

Snake Boy was very resistant to submitting to the rule of Pythas. One time, he refused to pay tribute to Pythas and so Gothmog went to The Witch King for advice. The Witch King instructed Gothmog to go to the city of Ubar and tear each of the tents that made up the city. Gothmog did this, which angered Snake Boy greatly. It angered Snake Boy so much that he hit the goblin. Snake Boy did later pay the tribute.

Gothmog received a letter from Snake Boy after Snake Boy had paid the tribute. In the letter, Snake Boy asked Gothmog to leave his tower and join with his tent kingdom (Ubar City) instead. Gothmog destroyed the letter and decided it would be best to no longer speak with Snake Boy except for business purposes.

Six days after Gothmog destroyed the letter, he became mysteriously ill and later died.

Snake Man

Gothmog also dealt some with Snake Man, who is likely the father of Snake Boy. Snake Man tried to threaten Gothmog into letting his sons out of Cirith Ungol, Snake Man said if Gothmog would not do so, he would kill Gothmog's wife. Gothmog called Snake Man's bluff though and told him to "slay away" but he would not release his sons. Snake Man stuck Gothmog several times and threatened him with his knife but still, Gothmog would not budge. Snake Man was thus cowed and made a business negotiation with Gothmog, undoubtedly this business negotiation greatly benefited Gothmog and the Black City.

Gothmog hated Snake Man greatly. Even on the day of Gothmog's death he was heard saying "I hate Snake Man."

Stavros

Gothmog also did business with the man known of as Stavros who dwelt in the North where the winters are bitter cold and cruel. Gothmog negotiated a deal with Stavros. To Stavros, Gothmog sold wood from the Forest of Lucre to use "for warmth in the winter and cool in the summer." For this, Stavros paid with his soul.

Randal

Gothmog also went to the South, where he made a deal with Randal who was only a simple scribe. Gothmog got Randal to sell his soul for 60 sheets of paper.

The Sunderlands

Gothmog had business deals with the Sunderlands as well. He negotiated with a man named Kelvin Sunderland. Gothmog told Kelvin Sunderland to bring his fleet to carry spices, fabrics, flour, and oil to the mainland and to the Providence Colony.

Kelvin refused, saying that he only carries oil and salts. Gothmog gave Kelvin 20 days to reconsider. At the end of the 20 days it is said that Kelvin sang the dirge of Morgoth, which made Gothmog sad. A deal was then made, one thousand kilos of flour and spice for a seat at Liberty House.

Helping Vultures

Gothmog appeared to have had a bit of a soft spot when it came to vultures as he had some dealings with them. When Rangle the Thief would steal Orome's golden antlers, he would bring them to Gothmog. Gothmog would melt down the antlers and forge them into golden talons for Rangle to put on his feet.

Gothmog also plucked a female vulture chick out of the sea near Das, saving her from drowning. Gothmog took her to his tower and cared for her. He did not take care of her for long as he got sick and died soon afterwards.

Death

The circumstances of Gothmog's death are very suspicious and strange. Some have thought that there was certainly foul play involved.

Illness

Towards the end of his life, Gothmog contracted a mysterious illness. In fact on one of his final days Gothmog wrote "I have grown sick. I can not do my duties today. I do not feel anything."

Regrets

While on his deathbed, Gothmog started to regret his life as an evil goblin serving Pythas and The Witch King. He wrote a song about his regrets to Snake Boy, who had previously offered Gothmog a place in his Kingdom in Ubar City. The song was as follows:

"In the night I cry,
In the dark I mourn,
I wish to the stars I was a boy,
Not a goblin with smelly breath,
How I wish I was something better...
Something real... something pure!
I brought my wishes to this song,
I hope snakes hear,
How I long for life as a clean boy,
Not a smelly goblin.
How I long for life as a clean boy,
with white teeth and blue eyes.
How I long for life like this."

What Gothmog had longed to look like.
